Rift: Planes of Telara

Today Trion announced the three games it is working on, and announced that the game I am working on, previously titled "Heroes of Telara" is now titled "Rift: Planes of Telara." Along with the announcement came a new website, new videos, and new concept art! Here are some pieces that appear on the website. Some of them are completely original creations, and some are part illustration-part concept reinterpretations based on work from artists from Carbon Canyon studios.

I'm having fun working on the game, and hopefully people will enjoy playing it!

Hawaii

I was recently in Hawaii and I did this small watercolor while drying off after some snorkeling. It was a beautiful day! I found so much inspiration there from colors in lava rocks and strange tourists to rusty metal roofs and rain forests. If I can get any photos of use from my trip, I will post them.

Now, on to my season painting. My goal is to do one each season for the season it's in. I haven't decided what medium to do them in yet, but they will be traditional for sure.

Merm

A coworker at Trion showed me a very strange in-browser drawing application the other day. I can't remember the name but it made some very interesting marks. I took some of those into photoshop and screwed around until the thing looked like a kelpy underwater scene. I threw a mermaid in for good measure.

Time Out!!

I try not to do this, but I have to take some time out and post a non-art related comment...well, I suppose it's sort of art related. My school, San Jose State University, is one of the many California State University schools affected by the horribly bad budget problems the state is facing. The students there are suffering from teachers on furloughs who are required to take time off from teaching during the semester. The would-be students can't get into the school, even if they are qualified (or even OVER qualified) because of impaction.

SJSU changed my life. I received an education there that I would not trade for the fanciest art school or or the prestige of the ivy league. The beauty of the Cal State system is that it was meant to open the doors to education that were previously closed to many. The doors are closing again, and all we can do is speak out! I encourage anyone who cares to write your congressman/congresswoman and push for education, push for funding.

Some may say, "Oh, public education. It's a bloated system and a bureaucratic mess. Why should my tax dollars go to waste?" In the words of Benjamin Frankin, "The only thing more expensive than education is ignorance."

End of rant!!

Thinkpol Portrait WIP

Here is a rough lay-in for a portrait of a thought policeman. I think a guy like this would have to be a true believer, so he would have a sense of pride in what he does. Still, the horrors he inflicts take a toll on him and they show in his face. I think this portrait will change and evolve as I work it towards finish, but this is the general feeling I want to convey.
