Thoughtcrime

I think I maaaaay have one last 1984 piece brewing before I stop procrastinating and move on to the Spring piece I'm working on. I put this quick sketch in my sketchbook with no particular goal. This was part test with acrylics and part off-the-cuff illustration. I think the thought police would be a bit more stealthy than this, but it makes them look more sinister visually, which I like.

Doublethink

One of my favorite books of all time is back kicking around in my head, and I did this on a night where I was feeling rather angsty. I still want to work on character designs and illustrations for this book even though it won't be available to the public domain until 2044. This is a quick-and-dirty take on Winston.

"Spring" Beginnings

Many illustrators and fine artists have done seasonal series pieces, and they still do them. I wanted to do my own for some time. I'm interested in a fantastical take on the seasons with allegorical subject matter. This is a small thumbnail of my idea for the Spring season. In it a pan plays his forest music to an audience of young listeners. Surrounding the group is the ruins of a long-ago battle. The fallen cursed beast-warriors turned to metal, rusting and returning to the earth. Vines have begun to overtake them and flowers and turf cover them in a natural grave.

I want to work in traditional media as much as possible for my personal work, so this will be an acrylic painting. I'm not sure when I will finish it since work is very busy at the moment. This is on the plate though, and I can't wait to get to it!

The Unexpected

I very much enjoy the work of Michel Gondry, especially his music videos. In his film The Science of Sleep the character Stephanie, played by Charlotte Gainsbourg, says, "Randomness is very difficult to achieve... organization always merges back if you don't pay attention." I find this to be true in all aspects of art.

As the so called "late night wars" are now fading out of the public consciousness, I wanted to put up a video showcasing a classic moment from the Johnny Carson show. It's beautiful because it surprises you over and over again, each time the random antics build towards a hilarious end.
